Our opinion: Police should use Tasers with caution
Should police be quick to use Tasers when trying to subdue an unruly suspect?
We don’t think so.Last weekend, a Miami University of Ohio graduate was tasered by police outside a bar at Oxford, O., while he was involved in a scuffle with authorities. After being tased, the student collapsed and was rushed to a hospital. He died Thursday.This is just the latest serious incident involving the use of Tasers by police. Since the devices were introduced, 290 people in the United States have died after being tased. The devices have been linked to deaths in other countries as well.In November 2007, the U.N. Committee Against Torture said that use of a Taser can be considered a form of torture.While we don’t advocate an outright ban on the use of Tasers, we believe that police should use the devices with extreme caution. They should be as hesitant to resort to the use of a Taser as they should be to the use of a gun. In both cases, the results often can be deadly.
